Your guide and driver will meet you in the lobby of your Nanjing hotel at 08.30 to start your tour of the city.  

Nanjing has been an important city in Chinese history for over a thousand years. During the 3rd century the city area was the capital of the Eastern Wu during the Three Kingdoms period. Then in the 14th century all of China was ruled from the city during the Ming Dynasty. It is during this period that the city walls were constructed and are still well preserved today, being the longest city wall in the world. The Republic of China was founded in 1921 and Nanjing (then Nanking) was chosen as the capital with Dr Sun Yat Sen as the President. The modern city still plays an important role in China, being the home to one of the world’s biggest inland ports.  

From your hotel you will be taken by air conditioned car to Zhongshan Mountain National Park, a vast and picturesque area that contains the Mausoleum of Dr Sun Yat Sen who rallied people to rise up against the last imperial dynasty, the Qing.  The Mausoleum is a magnificent building that sits high above the surrounding park.  

The park is also home to the tomb of Emperor Hongwu, known as the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum.  This is a World Cultural Heritage Site and as well as the Mausoleum, the Sacred Way with many stone statues including camels and elephants is fascinating to walk along.  

After lunch, it is time for a little exercise as you arrive to the Zhonghua Gate, the magnificent southern gate of Nanjing’s city wall. This part of the wall is one of the best preserved sections in the city and provides an excellent example of how city walls and gateways were constructed to provide maximum defence against attack by enemies.  

Followed by your private guide, you can relax as you cruise on the Qinhuai River, a more than 100km Long Branch of the Yangtze River.  It is said that the river was diverted to the city during the reign of Emperor Qin Shi Huang from where its name comes.  You can see many places of interest as you cruise down the river and enjoy the traditional culture of Nanjing.  

You final visit today is at the Confucian Fuzi Temple. Originally an imperial examination centre to select court officials, the area now only has a small number of the buildings remaining, including the temple, but it is a bustling bazaar area with some interesting sculptures and a good place to watch local residents coming and going from the temple.  

After visiting the Fuzi Temple your guide and driver will take you back to your hotel where the tour ends.
